All of the picture's I've found of this band suck
Albeit, these words are fantastic. I can't do this type of justice:
"Nihilism and Straight Edge go together like flies and shit - that's where xFilesx are coming from. For everyone out there who is tired of being bullshitted by marketable versions of hardcore music, and at the same time tired of the third Reich of political correctness, your time has come. They live and play with a sincerity that can't be bought and can't be faked, hailing from New Bedford, MA, a town notorious for turning out the best hardcore outside Boston and violent young psychos. This is hardcore music, plain and simple, for people who are tired of being a target market. Fast, aggressive and unapologetic - the music is primitive and brutally honest, and doesn't need buzzwords like "crucial" to hold it up like a crutch."
If you're not screaming along you can just shut the fuck up.

Titan
A little sludgy metal(core) for a change, and from Toronto to boot.
Hello again. I had jaw surgery on the 13th and have been spending time recovering from it since then. Now that I am off the painkillers that they gave me, I should be able to finally find some time to post more (but no promises).
I saw these chaps with Buried Inside two years ago, they ripped.

Asaf Avidan
This post is for my friend Bob who is soon leaving for South America. Thank you for the tunes and the vegan spinach and artichoke dip.
Asaf Avidan is an Israeli folk artist, signer-songwriter and today I am in love with his beautiful voice. His last two albums have been released with his backup band The Mojos, but I have included his first solo ep as well. Apparently this guy gets a lot of flack in his home country for singing in English.
I wonder what his songs/voice would sound like in Yiddish...

The Action Taken
Finally, everything is ready to go.
I (had) just got this record in the mail two days ago (when I wrote this post).
Before there was Have Heart and Wolf Whistle, there was The Action Taken, and here Patrick Flynn and Ryan Hudon actually share vocal responsibilities. I don't have much else to say really, it's younger and more youthful than HH and the lyrics are much less mature or developed... all being said it's a decent straightedge release and considering that the members were mostly only 16 when the band began it's a pretty decent album.

Right Away, Great Captain
My tattoo artist introduced me to this fine young gentleman's music.
Now, I have another hardcore post pending but since my roommate is on WoW and hates when I upload (because the lag kills him) I'm posting this as these albums are already on mediafire.
Anyway, the man has a nice voice and it's pretty relaxing acoustic stuff reminds me a little of Elliot Smith but with more structured guitar work. His albums are supposed to tell the story of a 17th century sailor who catches his wife cheating on him with his own brother. I can't comment on that though, as I actually haven't listened to a full album through yet. I always seem to get distracted...

Score One For Safety
I for one, find it extremely tedious when others try to (over) classify bands and musical styles, music (I believe) is carnal, and plain and simple, should not need to sound esoteric when being described. Alas, at the risk of sounding pretentious I must attribute to the many interesting qualities of Score One For Safety's style that blend different musical elements together creating something much more than a standard skram album. This being said, as I attempt further classification I must add that each album in and of itself is inherently different from each other although each contains mostly rather long (>5 min) song structures.
Yoni is my favorite, it contains elements of post-rock which fuse nicely together creating a very atmospheric screamo sound, especially in the final track with the use of a viola.
Animals and Objects is a more punky and youthful substandard skram release, not much interesting going on here.
Lastly, the Castles EP signals the end of the band and is a further refined continuation of Yoni. The real gem on this EP is definitely the first song, probably my favorite of any of theirs, but with only two tracks (plus one unreleased bonus which is just instrumental) it is somewhat hard to judge where SOFS was heading.
After splitting, members of SOFS went on to join the bands Lahars and All Empires of the World.

P.S. Eliot
It's happened before. I put a record on from a band I've never heard before and instantly fall in love with them. But, it has never been quite like this.
When I first listened to this band's demo I felt instantly compelled, bobbed my head along the whole time and enjoyed it immensely. The next day I decided to listen to their LP. What struck me was this; the sound was very different, the vocal were less distorted the flow was less punk-like, and apparently (after reading into this) I found that they had replaced band members. Regardless, although I was thrown off originally, after the first few minutes of listening I very soon found something else I really liked about the sound, something different, and again I was compelled just as before.
Twice with one band.

(NICK THINKS) You Listen To Music Wrong
All right. Listen up all you mother fuckers, and listen up good.
You listen to music wrong.
"But Nick," you protest, in your sulky wiener voice, "how can I listen to music wrong? I mean, I just put it on, and let it roll". Shut up, you whiny ass mother fucker; I'm gonna tell you why.
Two things which you use/have that make you listen to music wrong: discographies and shuffle. If you use shuffle or DL full discographies, impale yourself on a rusty pole for me this very instant. Thanks.
Fuck Shuffle:
Thanks to the invent of iTunes and all that bullshit, it's pretty typical for people to put all their music into a program and just let it play random songs. WHAT THE FUCK?! Do you even care about music and the people who make it? I assumed, if you read this blog, you did. But apparently not. For a musician, (especially so for the type of bands featured here) their album is their life. They put there heart, soul, blood, sweat, tears and usually all their money into making an album. They spend hundreds and hundreds of hours putting together something that, essentially to the rest of the world, is THEM. Making sure the flow from track to track is perfect, that that last song is the ultimate ender song for an album, building an atmosphere and feel that coherently progresses from song to song. And what do you do with your fucking shuffle?? Piss in that bands eyes; essentially telling them that the work they put into crafting that masterpiece is all for not, seeing as you're just gonna listen to what ever fucking song comes up in what ever fucking order iTunes likes. FUCK. THAT. If you care at all about the bands you love, listen to their fucking albums the way they were intended!
Fuck Discographies:
"Oh man, I own every song ever done by Converge, so I must be a huge fan" - typical douche fuck
No. Fuck you. Take a grapefruit spoon and carve out your eye. Music is not a commodity. Owning music does not get you scene points. Your coolness is not measured by how many bands exist on your hard drive. Music is a special and precious thing; it can invoke emotions and feeling in ways that nothing else can. The right album can raise the spirits of otherwise unfixable moods, can keep you from offing yourself, or start a fucking party. But thanks to your discography downloading bullshit, you've reduced an entire band's life work to a fucking folder on your hard drive.
An album can't be truly appreciated until you've given it time and listens; let it sink in. Until you wake up with it in your head, until you can start humming the opening riffs to the next song as one song ends because you know that album that well, until you've really THOUGHT about the music you're listening to, you'll never truly appreciate and album. Discographies make this impossible. Twenty five to two hundred songs by an artist (even if not on shuffle) is impossible to appreciate or understand.
So here's what you're going to do. If you're not going to buy an album and are going to DL it instead (which I understand; music is expensive, and buying an album you've never listened to can be a waste if you don't like it,) download JUST that album by that artist. Listen to that album, from start to finish, front to back. Let it sink in. Listen to it as the artist INTENDED you to listen to it. If you don't like the album, or it doesn't move you, delete it. If you like it, keep that album, maybe pick up another album by them. Go out and buy that album in hard copy, go see the band live when they come to town, and scream their lyrics at their show; buy the album from them in person, or a t-shirt, or any other way to support them.
Now go out there, and listen to music the RIGHt way.
Nick.

Die, Emporer! Die!
I've been pretty much obsessed with this band as of late. I have just ordered their 7" acoustic album from this great website, and will add it to this post if I ever get it converted from vinyl.
Die, Emporer! Die! was a duo from Texas from 2003 to 2005 who played some of the most raw and intense emo I've ever heard, "emo in a screamo manner."
I think the acoustic album is the best, and by the way, the "discography" on the web you find is bullshit. It's just the first 7 tracks from their 9-track demo, this being said I just plain don't have all of their releases.

Orchid
With a blog named after the first track from this bands album "Totality" it seems strange that I have waited fifty-odd posts in order to finally assemble a sufficient Orchid installment.
Regardless, they formed in Amherst Massachusetts way back in late 1997 and began experimenting with the emo sound. By adding spastic, screamed vocals and increasing the temp of the emo backdrop they more-or-less initiated and defined the screamo genre. Orchid has influenced in some way or another, countless bands and musicians over the last decade. Since their break-up in 2002, Orchid's members have left to form/join some other really great groups such as Panthers, Ampere, Bucket Full Of Teeth, Transistor Transistor, and Wolves; any of which I would well recommend.

Here is also a copy of their final show.

Withdrawal
Have you ever been to Winnipeg? It fucking sucks for the most part.
1. The winters are insanely cold.
2. 2008 murder capital of Canada.
3. Hostile natives.
4. Almost everyone that lives in the city is a prick.
The one great thing about living in such an awful place is it gives you a lot of fuel to create angry music and motivates you to tour. This is where Withdrawal comes into play.
With a demo and highly acclaimed 7' under their belts, Withdrawal is ready to spread the gospel of holy terrorism as far as possible. Blending the sounds of clevo style hardcore and death metal, listeners should be ready for a punishing affair.
If I could suggest one active, Canadian hardcore/metal band to anyone it would be this band. If you get the chance to see them on tour, do it. If you dig what you downloaded, pick up Unknown Misery here.

So, it's been a while. Heck, well I've been busy.
This is a great screamo release from a Canadian band out of Toronto, lots of chaos.
It was released on this great independent (now defunct) record label Gorgeous Industries, who's other bands I hope to follow up this post with.
They are now called "Authors" but since they were "The Smile" when I bought this record (2007), that's how I'm posting it!

ISIS
I just finished two all-nighters in a row so fuck it, this is what last.fm has to say:
"Formed in Boston in 1997, Isis is a band that combines ambience, atmosphere, and aggression to form a unique style of metal music. Isis draws from post-rock, which leans away from the traditional elements of choruses, verses, repetitive vocals, or fast/repetitive riffs. Compared to many post-rock bands, though, Isis displays more hardcore and sludge influence (especially in their pre-Celestial era)."

Blacklisted
Of all the modern hardcore bands that are currently making music, Blacklisted is my favorite. In a genre where releasing the same sounding album over and over is often celebrated, Blacklisted has found a way to successfully progress their music tastefully.
I would encourage anyone who is downloading these albums to listen to them chronologically. It's like watching your older brother going from an irate, violent teenager to being in a straitjacket before reaching the age of 30.

Formed in '06 and died shortly after. From Wittenberg, East Germany, they offer some very appealing screamo, something that puts a rather nice smile on my face though I have no idea what they are singing about.
Rather than create some sort of long winded comparison I'll let you make up your own mind.
(this album was actually never officially released so enjoy)

Enemy Airship
Bring the pain Derek, bring the pain.
My old friend's band from years ago in Sudbury Ontario, these are the demos I have by them. Good luck trying to find any info on these guys, they were quite short lived.
This one's for you Kim.

FIRST MATH POST!
This ones for Zach and Steven.
So I have been bothered that my blog is not legitimate. For where is the math?
There are a thousand ways to answer this question, or at least I feel as though there are as I don't know how to truly answer it. For truth I never envisioned this page to be at all mathematical, or to discuss mathematical topics. It was more to act as a release from such times when I felt overwhelmed by mathematics, a place for "new ideas" so to speak. It is a hobby, an outlet for appreciation of the bands that get me through the day.
I could go on and on about the inspiration I feel at times listening to the music I choose to post, but usually with too much to say and little confidence to say it (story of my life?) I write very little, and again that will be the road I choose to take.
Now, that was all neither here-nor-there so back to the topic at hand:
Mathematics.
For the satisfaction mainly of the majority of the people I have coaxed into viewing my blog, those with an esteem for the music I post lying within any given epsilon of none (ie 90 percent of my hits thus far) and for the curiosity of those outside this circle from which I rarely venture. I will make a short post about a certain mathematical fascination of mine; Differential Geometry. (sorry but no PDE's this time)
As my lecture notes from today's class speak loosely:
"Differential Geometry is the study of Smooth Manifolds and special "geometric structures" on them.
Examples of such include: Riemannian Metrics and Simplectic Forms:
Now, if your first question is timidly; "What is a smooth manifold?" then I must say welcome to the world of terse, complicated mathematical definitions which are composed of in their brevity only an onslaught of more terse complicated definitions seemingly ad infinitum. (note: this is nearly always the case or in certain special circumstances -usually in diff geo- where the definitions in their excruciating detail take around a page to write out.)
If on the other hand your thoughts are more aligned with the phrase "Yes, I know. What then?"
Then the following links may be of some interest.

Wikipedia!
But whatever the opinion of the esoteric definition above, if it struck fascination at all, I hope (at least from a mathematical perspective) that there is at least some vestige of the questions "Why is this important (what does this tell us)?" "What does this lead to (what does this infer)?" and "What does this mean?"
For if only platonic, there still must be a significance to a definition or result mathematically. "Ideas are only as good as the actions that follow and definitions are only as good as the results they lead to," to paraphrase my friend Zach.
I understand mathematics is not everyone's passion, at times I am even unsure if it is mine -it is certainly true that specific realms are not- so I have not intended upon being overbearing, and I apologize if I have.
"We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one adores it intensely" - Oscar Wilde
I will end this now as not burden you with any more of my ramblings. Feel free to comment and tear me up for offending you as well.
